Google Cardboard has been around for a year and a half. It is Google’s first VR viewer which provides two lenses and holds your smartphone to function as a VR device. Since then, we have seen a lot of VR apps, games and many other advanced VR headsets from different companies but not from Google itself.
Now, a recent report from The Financial Times proves that Google is getting serious about VR. According to the report, Google is planning to release its own VR headset which will be a rival toSamsung’s Gear VR. The company has also created a new Virtual Reality division to manage all of Google’s VR products.
The new headset will apparently be more expensive than the Google Cardboard and will come with inbuilt sensors, better lenses and a solid plastic casing instead of cardboard. This new headset (unlike Google Cardboard which rely solely on smartphone’s sensors to detect position of head) will have additional motion sensors to make VR experience smoother.
The other big news is that Google is also working on Android VR technology to bring VR compatibility directly to Android OS. This will allow developers to write VR apps more easily and reduce latency. According to report, Google is likely take same approach with VR headset and Android VR, as it takes with its Nexus devices. The flagship hardware will be able to show off the capabilities of the platform and developers will be able to take advantage of software to create VR apps.
Google has not yet commented anything on these rumors as of yet. But it is highly possible that we will hear something about Google’s VR plans at Google I/O 2016 in may.
